The Faculty hosts a number of seminars and public lectures featuring visiting academics and opinion leaders. The South African College of Music (SACM) presents:
2 October 2012: UCT Symphony Ochestra Concerto Festival. Conductor, Alexander Fokkens. Six of the best students from the SACM appear as soloists with the orchestra.

4- 6 October 2012: SACM Jazz Festival. This annual SACM Jazz Festival features the UCT Big Band & other groups from the jazz programme, as well as staff members Andrew Lilley, Mike Rossi, Amanda Tiffin, Darryl Andrews & Jason Reolon.

The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) presents:
4 October 2012: Great Texts / Big Questions: Adam Haupt. Adam Haupt discusses the Fanonian resonances in his new book Static: Race and Representation in Post-Apartheid Music, Media and Film. Cutting across academic disciplines, the creative arts and the media, Haupt's interdisciplinary book forms the basis of his presentation which critically examines music, cinema, social media and the politics of change after apartheid.

11 October 2012: Great Texts / Big Questions: Steven Friedman. Political scientist Steven Friedman talks about "Freedom for the Few: Ending the Middle Class Monopoly on South African Democracy". Friedman has researched and published widely on the South African transition to democracy both before and after the elections of 1994 and has, over the past decade, largely written on the relationship between democracy, social inequality and economic growth.

17 October 2012:Music in the City: Justin Krawitz. Following appearances at venues and festivals in several parts of Europe this year, pianist Justin Krawitz will present a program of contemporary piano music as part of GIPCA's Music in the City series. With his work as a 2011 Donald Gordon Creative Arts Fellow as a base, this concert features both local and international composers, and draws significantly on Krawitz’s experience working with living composers.

18 October 2012: Great Texts / Big Questions:Anton Harber. Award-winning author and editor Anton Harber will discuss why he chooses journalism in the final 2012 Great Texts/Big Questions public lecture. Harber will examine the changing work and role of journalists in the storm created by new technology, and state and commercial pressures, referencing his book Diepsloot and drawing on texts by Tiyo Soga, George Orwell and Eduardo Galeano.

24 October 2012:Music in the City: The UCT Jazz Voices with Mike Rossi. The highly acclaimed jazz vocal group The UCT Jazz Voices, directed by Amanda Tiffin, will perform well known jazz standards and South African favourites arranged for jazz choir at GIPCA's final 2012 Music in the City concert. The vocal ensemble will be joined by woodwind specialist Mike Rossi, who has recently returned from two European tours that included performances in England, Austria and Italy.
